After suffering a hamstring injury against Burnley in the Premier League, De Bruyne missed their UEFA Super Cup victory over Sevilla in midweek.
His appearance in the Champions League final in June was cut short by the ailment, which has since returned.
To fix the problem, the 32-year-old will have surgery.
He won’t be here for four or five months.
“We’re not at our best [because of injuries]. It’s normal, and we adjust a few things, but the spirit is there,” Guardiola told a news conference on Friday.
