The level of devastation to its residents as a result of recent oil spills that have occurred in the area has been mourned by the Ibioete village in the Odoroikot community of the Mkpat Enin Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.
Information received indicates that the July spill devastated significant cropland and caused the demise of aquatic life in the affected areas.
In Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, the village chief of the neighborhood, Eteidung Akpan J., released a statement on Monday. Elder Akpan I, the Secretary, and Ekpo. Akpan remembered the destruction brought on by past oil leaks in the area that occurred between 1996 and 2012.
ExxonMobil and Okoro Oilfield-AMNI International Development reportedly gave the community compensation following a visit and confirmation by the oil corporations.
The villagers expressed concern that the activities of these oil firms had once again exposed the community to an oil spill and asked the state government and relevant authorities to “mop up the spilt oil and pay compensation to the affected fishermen and community accordingly.”
The following is an excerpt from the statement that was sent to the Mkpat Enin Executive Chairman, the Paramount Ruler, and community stakeholders.
Ibioete Village, an Odoroikot hamlet in the Mkpat Enin LGA, is regrettably suffering from the effects of the recent oil spill along its Atlantic Ocean coastline.
When the concerned oil companies, ExxonMobil Producing Nigeria Unlimited and Okoro Oilfield-AMNI International Development business limited, visited the village, tested the water, and confirmed that it was a reality, history will show that the same issues occurred in 1996 and in 2012.
“Despite this, the community and the Mkpat Enin Local Government Area were fairly rewarded. Based on this, another oil leak has been caused by these oil corporations this year, in July 2023.
“Our fishermen have suffered significant losses as a result at the Atlantic Ocean and in the Creeks and Rivers.
In order to urgently “Mop up the spilled oil and pay compensation to the affected Fishermen, community accordingly,” we use this medium to alert the state government and oil firms.
