Gunmen opened fire on a crowd of people that had congregated in a Colon building on Sunday, September 3, resulting in the tragedy. One of them was Gilberto Hernández.
In the assault, Hernández perished and seven other people were hurt.
In a statement, the Panama Football League confirmed the information.
The Panama federation also released a statement in which it expressed regret over Gilberto Hernandez’s untimely death.

The national police stated on Monday that “a citizen suspected of the murder of a football player, which occurred on Sunday… in the province of Colón” had been apprehended.
According to government statistics, Colón province in Panama, which has a population of roughly 300,000, saw 102 homicides in 2017—a nine-percent decrease from the previous year. 
According to the authorities, rival drug gangs are largely to responsible for the bloodshed.
At the time of his passing, Hernandez was a member of the Panamanian team Independiente.
