On Sunday, August 5, 2023, the incident took place at the Umudibia neighbourhood near Maternity Junction and the Federal Polytechnic Nekede in Owerri.

The family’s patriarch, Arthur, also known as Agwu Oti Aka, won a silver medal in para-badminton despite having a disability. On August 14, 2023, he was slated to compete in a disabled badminton match for Nigeria in the US.

When the disaster happened, Arthur was riding a motorcycle with some of his kids while his wife, housekeeper, and other kids were travelling on two other motorcycles.

While Arthur, his wife, and their 14-month-old infant died instantly, his housekeeper and his two sons perished in an Owerri hospital a short time later.
Prince Mekoyor, a neighbour of the murdered family, verified the unfortunate incident on Wednesday, August 9. He said the drunk motorist drove off his lane and struck the family.

“Arthur as I fondly called the deceased was living in the same house with me at Weathral till this last Sunday when he perished with his family. He has only one hand and was about to represent the country on Disabled Badminton competition in the USA on the 14th August 2023. He runs a restaurant at Polynek school junction,” he explained.

Mekoyor claims that the driver of the RX 3:30 Lexus SUV was not the owner of the vehicle and had borrowed the vehicle from Holy Family Junction Poly Nekede in order to withdraw cash for a drink buy.
The driver sped off to an ATM at the Master’s Energy petrol station on Aba Road in Owerri, according to what he recalled. On his way back, the driver lost control of the steering at Maternity Junction Polynek and hit Arthur’s family square in the face.
He was on top speed on his way back and he lost control of the steering at Maternity junction, Umuokoto on Polynek-Ihiagwa road. He ended up knocking down a man and the entire family of Arthur face to face. Arthur and his family were on their way home at 11:05pm whereas the suspect was heading back to the joint after collecting money at the ATM,” Mekoyo said

“He left his right lane and rammed into Arthur and family. Arthur was carrying his wife and his last born (daughter) of one year and two months on his red Windy Motorbike, whereas another bike was carrying his maid and two boys of about 7 and 5 years. He died on the spot with his first child whereas the wife, baby, second child, house help and the bike man died at FMC Owerri,”
He further revealed that a second man who was in the same lane as him was also critically injured after being hit by the same automobile together with his wife and child.
Three of the accident’s participants, according to ASP Henry Okoye, spokesman for the State Police Command, are undergoing medical care at an unidentified hospital.
The badminton coach in Imo State, Justina Opara, who confirmed the unfortunate incident, characterised Arthur as a dedicated person who had competed for the state and the nation at both the national and international levels.
