A significant development apparently occurred after Gabonese military officers claimed to have taken control by announcing on TV that elections would be cancelled and institutions would be dissolved.
This happened only a short time after Ali Bongo Ondimba, the 14-year-old president of Gabon, won re-election for a third term on Saturday. On Wednesday, the National Election Commission reported that the President received roughly 64.27 percent of the total votes cast.
It is important to note that this is not the first dramatic occurrence the nation has seen. In an earlier appearance on state television on January 9, 2019, Gabonese troops said they had staged a coup to “restore democracy” in the West African nation.
The Republican Guard’s commander, Lieutenant Obiang Ondo Kelly, said that the military had taken over the administration at that moment in a statement he read aloud. Two other troops flanked him with their rifles drawn, and they were all donning green berets and camouflage outfits.
Bongo and his late father Omar, who ruled the oil-rich nation of Gabon for more than 50 years, passed away in 2009.
