The event happened on Friday night in the state’s Ahoada East Local Government Area’s Odumude Community.

Respected policeman Bako has established a reputation for himself in the state’s war against cultism, kidnapping, and murder.

In an effort to drive out the cultists in the region, the police DPO was dispatched to Ahoada towns being plagued by devil-minded cultists this year. The police DPO had previously worked at Khana LGA’s Bori Police Divisional Headquarters, where he had brought order to the region.

Because the Ahoada settlements of Odumude, Odumereni, Odemusoma, and Ihugbogo were at the mercy of cultists, the police dispatched one of its best officers, Bako, to these areas.

It will be recalled that a source in Odumude, where Bako was killed, claimed under the condition of anonymity that the local cultists had forbade locals from informing security authorities of any criminal activities in the neighborhood.

Bako had intensified pressure on the cultists, forcing some of them out of their camps while coercing others to hand up their weapons, it was discovered when he returned to duty.

Bako, the commander of the special team, was slain on Friday, though, when the neighborhood cultists regrouped and went back into the bush with the aid of a spiritualist.

The Rivers State Police Command characterized the situation as regrettable and stated that those accountable needed to be held in check.

According to Superintendent of Police Grace Iringe-Koko, who addressed on behalf of the command, Bako was killed in the jungle during an ambush while participating in an attack against cultists in Ahoada.

Iringe-Koko stated: “During a mission to stop criminal activity in the Odumude Area of Ahoada East Local Government Area in Rivers State on September 8, 2023, the DPO of Ahoada Division, SP Bako Angbashim, displayed exemplary courage.

“SP Bako Angbashim and his committed team conducted a raid at some of the area’s well-known hotspots for illegal activity. The operation resulted in the pursuit of criminals out of their covert lairs. Tragically, a large group of criminals ambushed them as they were leaving this operation and started shooting at the brave officers.

“SP Bako Angbashim bravely held his ground in the face of this difficulty, while his men tactically retreated when their ammunition ran out. Unfortunately, SP Bako Angbashim died as a result of injuries he received during this battle, and one of his informants was also hurt and is currently receiving medical attention for a gunshot wound.

“SP Bako Angbashim’s body was taken by the criminals, prompting the surviving officers to head back to their base for reinforcement. The Army personnel stationed at FOB Base Etraco were contacted for aid in the effort to rescue and recover the DPO’s body. However, the procedure was difficult because it was so dark condition within the dense bush.

She expressed sympathy to the Bako family and the missing police officers while reassuring them that every attempt was being made to find the murderers.

“CP Nwonyi Polycarp Emeka, PhD, the commissioner of police for Rivers State, has stated a strong desire to bring those responsible for this atrocious murder to justice. To learn the details of this unfortunate incident’s circumstances, a thorough investigation is currently being conducted.

“Our thoughts and condolences go out to the family of SP Bako Angbashim and all those affected by this distressing incident,” the PPRO continued.
