Ministry Of Environment Budgets N1bn For Tree Planting In 2022

Two billion, Nine hundred and five million, one hundred and eighty thousand, eight hundred and seventy-five Naira (N2,905,180,875) only, was voted by the Federal Ministry of environment, and its agencies to plant trees in Nigeria, for the last three years.

In its renewed determination to close the gap for its target of the nationally determined contributions (NDC) to arrest greenhouse gasses (GHG), as part of the Paris agreement in 2015, the ministry and its agencies have cumulatively earmarked, over N1 billion, in its 2022 fiscal year, for tree planting among which was to enhance the shelter belt of the 11 frontline states


The budget reads in part: “Federal Ministry of Environment headquarters” with the code “23040101 tree planting N633,366,380.

“Federal College of Forest Resources Management, Ebonyi State (South -East) N 92,014,769 and the National Agency For Great Green Wall Hqtrs N322,576,900.” The total planned expenditure for tree planting in the year 2022 stood at N1,047,958,049.

Distribution of the budgeted figure for the last three years showed that in 2019 Ministry of Environment (MoE) headquarters in Mabushi voted N214,102,193 for tree planting; it budgeted, N388,127,422 in 2020 amended budget and N359,212,450 for 2021. These amounts for “tree planting” in the last three years totalled N961.4 by the mother ministry without her agencies.

Tribune Online can authoritatively report that it would cost taxpayers N4.1bn for tree planting, by the end of the 2022 fiscal year. The amount would be the cumulative budgets spent by the federal government through the Ministries Department and Agencies (MDAs) in the Office of the Civil Service of the Federation, Ministry of Agriculture, Health, Science and Innovation, Water Resources, Education and the lead ministry of Environment.

This was because the ministry and her agencies had invested N2.9bn already in planting trees across the country between 2019 – 2021. Its current budgeted N1.1bn would raise the investment to over N4bn by the ministry.

Over N1bn was budgeted solely for tree planting in the frontline state by the National Agency for the Great Green Wall and others in the year 2019 – 2021.
