[Minimum wage]: ASUU joins nationwide strike

The ongoing nationwide strike led by the NLC and TUC has taken a significant turn as the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has announced its participation in the industrial action.

This decision comes in response to the Federal Government’s failure to meet the unions’ minimum wage demand. In a statement directed to branch chairpersons and zonal coordinators of ASUU, the association’s President, Mr. Emmanuel Osodeke, instructed lecturers nationwide to join the strike as an affiliate of the congress.

Mr. Osodeke’s statement highlighted the NLC’s declaration of an indefinite strike action starting from Monday, 3rd June, 2024. The strike is a direct consequence of the government’s inability to conclude the renegotiation of the minimum wage for Nigerian workers and to reverse the recent hike in electricity tariff.

This move demonstrates solidarity among various sectors of the workforce in Nigeria, emphasizing the shared concerns and demands for fair treatment and equitable wages. As ASUU joins forces with the organized labor, the message to the government is clear: urgent action is needed to address the grievances of workers across the nation.

The unity displayed by ASUU and other labor unions underscores the collective strength of workers in advocating for their rights and pressing for meaningful change. It signals a commitment to stand together until their demands are met, reflecting a powerful expression of solidarity and determination.

As the nationwide strike continues, it serves as a reminder of the importance of equitable labor practices and the need for government accountability in meeting the needs of its workforce. Only through genuine dialogue and constructive engagement can lasting solutions be achieved, ensuring a fair and just society for all.Let us stand in solidarity with ASUU and the organized labor as they strive to create a better future for Nigerian workers and uphold the principles of fairness, justice, and dignity in the workplace.
