Days after being elected to a third term in government, Bendelnews had earlier claimed that Bongo had been removed from power by military officials.

Military leaders made their intention to seize control known on Gabonese state television, Gabon 24.

The leaders of the coup destroyed every institution of the country, including the government, Senate, National Assembly, and Constitutional Court.

According to Al-Jazeera, China reportedly requested of all coup participants to guarantee President Bongo’s protection in response to the incident.

“We call on all parties in Gabon to proceed from the fundamental interests of the country and the people, resolve differences through dialogue, (and) restore normal order as soon as possible,” said Wang Wenbin, a spokeswoman for the foreign ministry.

Wenbin urged everyone to “guarantee President Bongo’s personal safety and uphold national peace and stability.”
