The management of the Abia State University (ABSU) in Uturu has banned students from driving vehicles on campus.
Onyemachi Ogbulu, the vice-chancellor (VC) of the varsity, announced the ban in a statement on Tuesday.
The statement was signed by Acho Elendu, the registrar of the varsity.
In the announcement, the school vowed that it would punish students who flout the directive.
“Management of Abia State University, Uturu has banned the use of personal vehicles by students and flagrant display of wealth on campus,” the statement read.
“Henceforth, only staff and accredited visitors would be allowed to drive their vehicles into the campus.
“Any student who violates this directive, which is in the interest of the University community, shall face severe disciplinary action. Please, be guided.”
Tertiary institutions like Auchi Polytechnic in Edo state, Adeyemi College of Education (ACE) in Ondo state, and the Federal University of Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) in Ekiti state have announced similar proscriptions in the past one year.
The management of the Federal Polytechnic, Nekede in Imo recently banned students from driving private cars on campus.
In a circular dated January 29, the polytechnic described the use of cars by students on campus as a “flagrant display of wealth.”
